Happy New Year! I hope you all have a successful year in your efforts to live a great life full of new promise and hope. The beginning of the New Year is important, as it gives us an opportunity to assess where we are in our lives and where we want to be. It also lets us vocalize to our friends and loved ones our commitment to our upcoming challenges. We feel energized, supported and excited about what lies ahead. Compare and Contrast Essay
Is Traditional Karate or the Eclectic martial arts for you? Although Traditional Karate and the Eclectic martial arts styles are, both a martial curriculum based, there are a few similarities and the many differences of the two.
When using the term “eclectic martial arts” (Saavedra). I am referring to but not limited to Brazilian Jujitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, Ninjas, and other styles or teaching philosophies not based on the Traditional Karate Philosophy.
Traditional Karate Dojo setting and Eclectic Martial Arts training areas do have a few similarities. For instance, both have an open area for working out, they both may have training aids such as protective equipment for the participants and they both may also have a variety of punching bags and other striking pads available. In addition to, they may even have a variety of hand weapons for training, too. Furthermore, they both teach offensive and defensive hand to hand combat techniques as part of their curriculum. That is about the total sum of any comparison of the two.
However, Traditional Karate is a much formalized system in comparison to the eclectic style. In traditional karate even in the smallest or largest of setting, the Dojo (school) is considered to be a revered and traditional place of learning and respect. Upon the students entering the dojo, they will remove their shoes at the door and bow the Shomen. The Shomen is the symbol of the Karate style along with other pictures of the masters, and other symbols of respect and tradition displayed on the main wall of the dojo. The Shomen also represents the traditions and ideals of the Traditional Martial Artist. In traditional karate for instance, “All Deshi (students) wait patiently and quietly for the Sensei to arrive and teach. When he or she arrives the highest ranking Deshi call the rest of the students to attention, then they all bow formally to the Sensei”(Urban,23). All Deshi then line up from left to right according to rank, the highest ranking Blackbelts on the far left side. The Deshi are seated in a formal posture called Sieza and the highest ranking student will formally bow in the class to the Sensei. Next the Sensei will turn and face the Shomen and announce to all to bow to the Shomen while they all repeat the phrase, Onagaeshi Masu, which roughly translates to “Please Teach Us” in English. The class then has a period of meditation; according to Hanshi Saavedra: “It will clear the mind of the day’s issues and to be prepared to train hard and learn” (Saavedra). All of the students will then recite the Dojo Kun (virtues) aloud to solidify and nurture the value and the ideals that Traditional Karate represents. In the Dojo, the students wear a formal training uniform called a Gi, which is all white in color made primarily of cotton consisting of pants and a kimono style jacket with a ranking belt secured around the waist called an, Obi. The students are expected to act respectfully, and be motivated, attentive, and train diligently throughout the entire class. All this and more sets the art of Traditional Karate apart from the Eclectic styles of martial arts. In addition, the curriculum and the ranking structure of Traditional Karate allow the student to travel to a Dojo of the same style anywhere in the world and that student will be ranked and understand the structure plus be able to participate in the class fully.
On a physical fitness level, there are a few similarities between Traditional Karate and the Eclectic martial arts. They both help they practitioner develop better physical condition through a combination of aerobic and repetitive drills, and of course the benefits include being in better cardiovascular health and weight loss.
In contrast, it has been said that “Karate is for everyone, but not everyone is for Karate” (Saavedra) which means that Traditional Karate is for the young and the old. The Eclectic systems of instruction are based upon the concept of creating tough fighters which is primarily for male students between the ages of 16 to 35 years old. In Traditional Karate the Class begins with a systemized stretching curriculum that has its roots in Indian Yoga and the Shaolin monks of China. The stretching starts with small increments and increases with each student’s unique anatomy. The complex curriculum allows the Sensei to develop a unique set of techniques for the different age groups and each person’s unique physical limitations. Many handicapped individuals have advanced to the level of black belt. Traditional Karate is taught to students from the ages of 5 years old to 70 years old, men, women and children alike. In the style of Goju Ryu there is a traditional breathing exercise developed around two of its Kata’s that can help asthma patients and students with breathing issues become healthier and stronger. As per Master Urbans observations “It is not surprising that Karate students are rarely ill, for they know that it is necessary to use the body and the mind every day in order to function at their best” (Urban, 20).
Likewise, on the mental level of development for both Traditional Karate and the Eclectic martial arts, there are some good similarities. Both help to increase the student’s self-confidence and awareness. In addition, both have a positive effect on the students’ self-control.
On the other hand, Traditional Karate incorporates meditation practice at the beginning and end of every class. This meditation practice according to Hanshi Saavedra is about the Tibetan concept of Mukuso “Every training session begins and ends with meditation. Mukuso is the direct look into our own minds in order to see our true natures. By being able to see ourselves, we are better able to see others, and thus become aware and unafraid of both” (Saavedra). In contrast, traditional karate implements the ancient and very traditional practicing of the Kata’s. The Eclectic martial arts styles have almost completely eliminated them from their curriculums. Kata has been defined as meditation in motion, the Kata’s start with the most simplest of blocks then strikes. Like a pyramid they build upon each other in complexity, skills and knowledge. They require the student to look deep within themselves for tenacity, fortitude, unwavering patience, and intense concentration. One of Hanshi Saavedra observations is “That both external and internal disturbances fade away until they are no more disturbing than the distant sound of rolling thunder. Slowly but surely an immunity to life’s trivia and detachment from illusion becomes easier and quicker. Here again, Buddhist thought, as applied to kata, as "Moving Zen" is very appropriate” (Saavedra).
Furthermore, on a societal level there are only differences between the two styles. The Eclectic martial arts styles are concerned with only teaching people to fight, regardless of the person’s intentions, morality or values. In Traditional Karate the concepts of morality, honor, integrity and kindness are highly valued. Many Traditional Karate Styles have what is called a “Dojo Kun” or martial virtues like this one which is the Dojo Kun for the World Sansei-
1. We shall always practice and study. 2. We shall always be humble and kind. 3. We shall always be courteous. 4. We shall be quick to seize opportunity. 5. We shall always practice patience. 6. We shall always believe that nothing is impossible. 7. We shall discard the bad. 8. We shall keep the good. 9. We shall always be loyal to: Ourselves, Karate, Family, Community, and Country.
Love is our law.
Truth is our worship.
Form is our manifestation.
Peace is our shelter.
Nature is our companion.
Order is our attitude.
Beauty and perfection is our life.

The Dojo Kun is the guideline for the ideals and of the Traditional Karate practitioner. The Practice of Kata as according to Master Richard Kim is the key to addressing the morality of teaching a fighting art. “The answer is found in kata, the heart of karate. Kata is meant to train the mind and is not intended solely for conceptual and intellectual defense. Indeed to bring it in contact with its real self is its true purpose” (Master Richard Kim, 105). The duty of a Sensei besides teaching their students to defend themselves and to protect others is to be a life skills teacher, to help their students be the new generation of leaders with a high integrity. By Sensei Gallegos definition “ The career Sensei(teacher), it is never enough to teach and individual the foundation of the martial art, but rather a living blueprint for all individuals to maximize their full potential”(Sensei Gallego,13).
In other words, even though Traditional Karate versus the Eclectic martial arts styles do have a small number of similarities on the curriculum, physical, and mental levels, it is clear in the realm of being a positive benefit to our society that the Eclectic martial arts styles have none. According to Hanshi Saavedra, “I can teach anyone to fight. Heck, I can even teach a monkey how to fight” (Saavedra). There is truly a very substantial plus an imperative obligation and responsibility in being a teacher of the martial arts. The Traditional Karate Sensei cares very much about society and the impression he or she makes upon their students characters.

Truly proving "Nothing is Impossible".For my Critical Writing course the Professor said we could choose the subject format for all our required essays. I choose ,"How the Art of Traditional Karate Helps Me to Create Leaders of High Integrity". I will be posting the Essays for the readers of this blog to enjoy.

What is Traditional Karate and What are the Benefits of Traditional Karate?
Traditional Karate has its beginning dating back as far as 2000 B.C. in India. A Buddhist monk named Bodhidarma traveled from India to China to teach. Upon arrival to a Chinese Buddhist Monastery he found the Monks there in extremely poor health. They had been spending all of their time meditating, and they had let their bodies become very weak to the point that they could hardly even sit upright to mediate any longer. Bodhidarma knew he had to get the monks in better health mentally and physically. He developed a series of exercises and conditioning for the monks to practice, which is somewhat similar to Indian Yoga called “Eighteen Hand of Lo-Han” (World Sansei). Soon thereafter the Monks, who were very close to nature, began studying the various animals and their natural movements used to defend themselves against the other predators who were attacking, and killing their prey. The monks imitated and adapted the movements of the animals to what later came to be known as the art of Chuan-Fa or Kung-Fu. It should be noted that the art of Chuan-Fa was originally developed by the Buddhist monks for physical and mental conditioning, and lastly for self-defense only. For centuries the monks became very proficient and developed the art of Chuan-Fa. Around 600 B.C. the monks were attacked by raiders looking for treasure. They then used their art of Chuan-Fa to defend themselves victoriously. Shortly thereafter the word spread throughout China of the monks’ victory and many people came to study Buddhism and also to learn Kung-Fu at the Shaolin Temples. Since then, the art has branched off to as many as a hundred different variations and styles. During the 14th century, Chuan-Fa was introduced to Okinawa by the traders and sailors who traded with Okinawa from China. For 200 hundred more years, Chuan-Fa was practiced in the open by the Okinawans. In 1609, Okinawa was defeated and taken over by the Japanese. As a result, all weapons of any kind were destroyed or taken and the practicing of any type of martial arts was made punishable by death by the Japanese conquerors. The Okinawans still practiced and further refined their Chuan-Fa and even developed many weapons using every day farming implements in total secrecy for nearly 300 hundred years.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a sensei named Hanryo Higaonna started teaching Karate at a high School in Okinawa. Karate became a respected martial art in the Okinawan public schools system. He had spent 13 years in Fuzhou, China as a disciple of the great Ryu Ryu Ko. “In order to teach the youth of Okinawa, he developed a teaching method specifically designed to develop the mind and body; to improve both physical and spiritual well-being” (Saavedra). That style of karate known as Naha Te in Okinawa and known later as Goju Ryu in Japan and throughout the world became a systemized discipline, which means that it no longer belongs only to the Okinawan’s or the Japanese, but to the world. A very great Japanese sensei named Gogen Yamaguchi further developed Goju Ryu to include Yoga and the study of Zen Buddhism. All the teaching and methods of the great old masters are part of the style of Sansei Goju Ryu founded by Hanshi Manny Saavedra in 1979. Hanshi Saavedra continues to refine the principles, philosophies, training methods, and wisdom of the great Master Senseis of the past. He explains, “Modern traditionalist philosophy, which is ever changing and improving Karate system known as the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu Organization” (Saavedra). The World Sansei has a membership from all over the planet dedicated to this mission statement: “The mission of the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu Karate Do is to promote excellence in its members. Students becoming members in the organization will grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. Karate provides knowledge that will last the lifetime of the student. Discipline and preparedness learned in the dojo will allow the students to perform at higher levels, giving them a competitive edge, both in school and in the workplace. The student that accepts the Karate way sets himself or herself forever on the path of excellence” (Saavedra).
A traditional Karate curriculum is defined as being based around the historical roots and theories of self-defense that have been tested and perfected over many centuries. The Katas are centuries old predefined set of defenses and offenses that begins with the basics and gradually builds in complexity; each being a building block for the next. The Katas can also be referred to as a historical language of karate movement and philosophy. “Kata is meditation in motion” (Saavedra). The class curriculum instructs the students in basic, complex self-defense drills, and concepts also using the Kata curriculum as the primary reference. Ancient Kobudo (weapons) are taught as well. These concepts and drills can also be used in self-defense with common instruments found in the everyday environment. Kobudo requires years of dedication to master the Katas concepts thoroughly. “Discipline of both mind and body are developed as one strives towards perfection in thought and movement” (Saavedra). The rules of Dojo (school) etiquette are a big part of the Traditional Karate experience. Meditation and physical conditioning are an integral part of the curriculum. The sensei dedicates a portion of class time to discuss the life skills and philosophy of behavior as well as martial arts levels of life and reality.
Traditional Karate instruction and behavior rules are like no other types of systemized instruction or sport. The precepts of behavior, etiquette and instruction are very traditional; they are practiced the same without major differences in all Traditional Karate Dojos throughout the world. Upon arrival to the dojo, all students are required to remove their shoes at the door and bow to the Shomen (a symbol that represent the Dojo’s respective style) and to the sensei. The bowing is not a display in servitude or inferiority, but a display in respect and formality. Next, all students (De-shi) will line up according to rank; the highest ranked students closest to the sensei. Then the students will assume the sitting posture of Sieza, which awakens the mind and is a traditional way of formal sitting. The senior student will give the command to bow to the sensei and then the sensei will give the command to bow to the Shomen. Furthermore, the sensei will give the order to sit in the cross legged posture called the Lotus position and the class will begin a short meditation period to clear the mind for the day’s karate instruction. Afterwards, the students will repeat the Dojo Kun out loud. Sensei will then give a lecture of on a lesson of the Virtues and Ideals of the Traditional Martial Artist. The students will next begin a series of ancient and modern stretching exercises called Taiso, which closely resembles Yoga to enable them to be more flexible and of course injury free, for the rigorous practice and instruction to follow. The remainder of instruction can be in a multitude of skills, defensive or offensive techniques, Nage Waza (throwing techniques), Kansetsu Waza (Joint locking techniques) and of course Kata is always taught. At the Sensei’s discretion, he or she will teach Jiu Kumite (free form, controlled sparring) or Kobudo. At the end of class, the De-shi will again meditate, repeat the Dojo Kun, and bow out to the Sensei and to the Shomen. This is a very brief and simplified example of a usual Karate class.
The benefits of Traditional Karate on a physical fitness level are many. The most basic level is just simple breathing to the most complex ability to generate an incredible amount of speed and power in striking and blocking techniques. The breathing methods of Goju Ryu Karate have been shown to help increase concentration and help alleviate the symptoms of asthma. The stretching and flexibility exercises help the young, middle aged and especially the elderly to maintain good balance, coordination and healthy joints. Traditional Karate teaches the student that all movements need to be from stances that are firmly rooted and grounded to the earth. At the present time the levels of obesity and other health related issues due to a complete lack of any physical exercise in the United States and throughout the world are at unprecedented and alarming levels. The training called Martial Fitness Conditioning solves that problem. Senseis have incorporated Martial Fitness Conditioning into the curriculum which focuses on core body movements, calisthenics, flexibility, balance, endurance, plus life skills coaching on the importance of nutrition and self-control. For instance, as mentioned by Funikoshi, “I was rather sickly baby and a frail child; accordingly, it was suggested when I was still quite young that to overcome these handicaps I ought to begin the study of Karate” (Funikoshi, Preface XIII).
The family of Master Funikoshi was aware of the physical benefits of karate in the eighteen hundreds. The incredible speed and power is demonstrated by the advanced karate student; nothing more than a culmination of lots of hard work and practice in developing the physical and the mental. “The tremendous speed and power generated in the execution of Karate techniques has long been thought to have originated from the occult, knowledge shrouded in secrecy and mystery. When analyzed, all Karate techniques are based on, and governed by scientific principles. Similarly, the lightning fast reactions, which appear to make the attack and counter-attack one and the same, can be understood by applying psychological principles. At a very high level, it is possible to sense or feel the other person’s intended move, an ability present in move animals, but usually dormant in man”(Saavedra).
The benefits of Traditional Karate on a mental level are many. The mental abilities enhanced by traditional Karate training can be realized in the beginner and the advanced student. “Discipline of mind and body are developed as one strives towards perfection in thought and movement” (Saavedra). Most Traditional Karate Dojos practice meditation, meditation in the sense not as to be able to levitate off the ground or some absurd concept as that; yet, to be able to concentrate fully and with 100% of your mind on one task. One of the most important aspects of Traditional Karate that develops the mental strengths is Kata. “A kata is an arrangement of movements, which contains a series of logical and practical attacking and blocking techniques. In each kata there are certain set or prearranged movements, which the student can practice alone, without a partner. These katas have been shaped after many years of research, training, and actual combat experience.” (Saavedra). The perfection of a karate student’s kata is also a perfection of one’s self. The basic kata learn in the first few months of a student’s lessons are elemental in building a true foundation for his character and mental development. The first series of katas taught help to give the student an understanding of the basic stances, strikes, and blocks. Like the foundation of a great building, they must be firmly rooted to the earth and also perfected. Most students tend to become disappointed finding out how tedious and difficult it is to master them. Even the Sensei of 20 or 30 years experienced constantly practices the basic katas. The intermediate and advanced katas build upon the basics increasing in complexity, theory and real world applications. The intuitive levels of understanding the katas are developed after many years of constant practice. The attention perfected to the smallest detail, the breathing, focus, intent of emotions, and the clarity of movement is very Zen and meditative. “Both external and internal disturbances fade away until they are no more disturbing than the distant sound of rolling thunder. Here again, Buddhist thought, as applied to kata, as "Moving Zen" is very appropriate” (Saavedra). The first true opponent or conflict is oneself to perfect your mind and character is the goal of Traditional Karate.
The benefits of Traditional Karate for society are many. A traditional karate style sensei believes that his or her goal is to keep the traditions of Traditional Karate alive by helping to create men and women who represent the qualities of honor, integrity, high character, loyalty, and to be our future leaders.
Furthermore, karate also helps to develop the individual’s character, and to become a better person. In other words, as mentioned by Funikoshi, “The most important aspect of Karate is the development of character. What is character in terms of the philosophy of Karate-Do? Character is simply exercising discipline, exhibiting honor, duty and self-control, while continually adhering to humility. Without character and a strong foundation, nothing of substance can be accomplished. Winning championships is fun, having excellent technique is desirable, understanding kata and bunkai are optimal, but as wonderful as these things are, they should never replace a strong, disciplined character. Masters who have perfected character do not criticize others, nor do they seek the approval and admiration of other men, but rather exist to learn, teach, and develop in the way of karate-do. To develop character is to understand life” (Funikoshi, Sansei Blog).
The art of Karate is a martial art; in meaning that to be used in fighting and or battle. “Traditional Karate is truly about learning to fight so that you never have to fight” (Saavedra). The first fight is to perfect your character and lifestyle to not put yourselves into places or situations that would force you into a confrontation. Only by truly knowing yourself can you perfect oneself. “How does one go about teaching fighting techniques and instilling morality at the same time? The answer is found in kata, the heart of karate. Kata is meant to train the mind, and is not solely for conceptual and intellectual self-defense. Indeed, to bring it in contact with the real self is its true purpose” (Kim, 105). All traditional katas begin with a blocking technique because traditional karate teaching is that one should only use their karate except for self-defense. Traditional Karate schools have a list of virtues that the students are expected to live by, to represent their dojos, and Sensei’s of past and present with in and out of the dojo. Students represent loyalty to karate by reading aloud the dojo virtues of the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu Organizations, which is as follows:
“Dojo Kun
1. We shall always practice and study. 2. We shall always be humble and kind. 3. We shall always be courteous. 4. We shall be quick to seize opportunity. 5. We shall always practice patience. 6. We shall always believe that nothing is impossible. 7. We shall discard the bad. 8. We shall keep the good. 9. We shall always be loyal to: Ourselves, Karate, Family, Community, and Country.

These virtues are taught by all of the Sensei’s of the organization.
A truly traditional style of karate is about ideals, principles and ethics. The added benefit is to be able to defend yourself, to protect the defenseless, and the ones you love. Traditional Karate is a very positive and rewarding endeavor that is a benefit to the student and society.

World Sansei is a Brotherhood, Not a Business

This is a letter of Thanks for the inspiration and mentoring that Hanshi Saavedra has been for me. I want to begin with where my journey began approximately 16 years ago I first started training in the art of Goju Ryu karate in what an old school Karateka describe as a hard core Dojo with a very hard core instructor. The training and the instructor was brutal, not a dojo for the weak. No Air Conditioning. Adjacent to a horse barn on a ranch in NFM FL the maximum count of students at anytime was maybe 8. We trained 2 hours 3 times a weak .I used to park my car at the nearby convenience store and run 5 miles to class, train for 2 hours, practice a additional 1 hour and then walk back to my car (too tired to run back) Injuries were a norm and many nights after class I had to drive myself to the E.R. to get patched up or X-rayed. I will never forget the day we had belt testing and a student testing for his Black belt had to be Med-helicopter evacted to the hospital. But that is a different tale for later. After about 12 years my instructor moved on to a different city and I was left without a Dojo to train in, In Karate limbo.

After l a year or so of feeling my life was just missing something, I realized that Practicing Karate was a part of my life that made me complete. It is what I am, it is what I do, not sports or watching sports, and Karate had become part of what Brian Dean Robinson is as a man.

Now this is where my journey of Karate as a Martial Art actually began. After checking out all the local Dojo’s in town and not being in the slightest impressed. I remembered back to when I had first started in the Goju Ryu Dojo. We were for a brief period of time part of the Sansei Goju Ryu system under the leadership of a Hanshi Manny Saavedra. We even had bought the Traditional white Gi’s specifically for participation in the Sansei Goju Ryu tournament and events. But after about 1 year my instructor decided he wanted to follow the path of the U.S.A.G.A., so that’s the way we went. (The U.S.A.G.A. was a very untraditional and very self gratifying setup).

Then I remembered that I was not alone in Florida in the world of Goju Ryu Karate and wondered if Hanshi Saavedra would remember me from so long ago. (I was 14 years younger then and of course thinner) So I then went to the good-old internet and started a search for Hanshi Manny Saavedra/Sansei Goju Ryu. What I found was incredible and fantastic. Hanshi Saavedra had systematically founded and created the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu Organization with Dojo’s all over the world. His system is based upon a Dojo Kun of simple yet profound teaching and standards. With a strong belief that a karate-ka should be a good example as a leader and a person of the highest integrity a good example in and out of the Dojo. A true representative of Karate-Do, based upon the true and profound beliefs of Loyalty, Honor, Courage, Trust, just to name a few. A systemized and Traditional Goju Ryu Style not corrupted by self important ego’s or greed. His Traditional System Goju Ryu system reflecting the embodiment of the ancient Samurai Warrior, yet having grown in a very modern and matured wisdom of his 40 + years of experience..

I then contacted Hanshi Saavedra, explained to him who I was. And much to my surprise he remembered me from when I was competing in his tournaments and traveling to Miami occasionally with my old Goju Instructor. I informed him that I was looking to be involved in Goju Karate again and just wanted to learn. To my amazement he informed me that he was well aware of my previous instructor Karate skills of Goju Ryu and that I was welcome to join the Sansei Goju Ryu organization and my Black Belt earned with my previous instructor would be recognized and accredited with his system. I met him in person shortly thereafter and was informed that if I agreed to the rules and traditions of his organization I would be allowed to wear the Sansei Goju Ryu insignia and receive training and Mentoring from him and his Senior Blackbelts, and that I had to follow the rules and regulations of the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu International or I would be expelled. At that moment in my life I realized that I was beginning a newfound journey and life changing moment in my Life as a Karate-Ka.

My 1^st visit to the Honbo Dojo in Miami FL was refreshing and inspirational to say the least. I found myself and my family welcomed with open arms and hugs. My son and I participated in Karate class that morning. I introduced to many Sensei’s from all over Florida and some from other countries that were also visiting. All were super friendly, inspirational, and true representatives of the Sansei Goju Ryu ideals and standards of the World Sansei Dojo Kun. Shortly after my second visit to the Honbo Dojo Hanshi approached me and suggested that I should start my own Dojo. I Replied that I, had never even entertained the idea before. He told me that he knew of my instructor and my training and that I had the Skills required and that he and the other Sensei’s would help and mentor me on starting and running a Dojo in the Sansei Goju Ryu tradition. I have now been running a Dojo for almost 2 years now. And I can still remember the day myself and the other Sensei’s sat in front of the Honbo Dojo and created the Name for my karate school, the White crane Traditional Karate Dojo. The Journey has been incredible I continued to travel to the Honbo Dojo on a monthly basis for training, inspiration, friendship, guidance, and wisdom. I owe and incredible debt and Humble “Thank You’s” to all the Sensei’s who have helped me grow and to continue to learn the ways of Sansei Goju Ryu. Most of all I owe a profound Debt to Hanshi Saavedra for his Wisdom, mentoring, friendship. Only 2^nd to my wife Lucrecia for with without her guidance on teaching methods and skills and of course her Love and patience None of this would even be possible.

Now I want to reflect on the experiences and lessons of life and Karate that my short time with Hanshi Saavedra and the World Sansei Organization have blessed me with. It would be impossible for me to put in to words and express all that I have learned and all of the wisdom that I have gained from my friendship with Hanshi Saavedra and from all of the Honorable Sensei’s. Some of the Life skills and lessons I will not even be aware of until the distant future and some have helped me in my present and past life without me even being aware.

One of the 1^st humbling realizations is that “How little that I know about Karate and the Martial Arts” I have realized that No Sensei can know everything. Every Sensei of the Sansei Organization has Skills and knowledge and wisdom that he or she can give. Whatever his or her specialty of the Martial Arts is, all have unique skills, talents and life experiences that are of great value. If you meet any Sensei who claims to be a Great, knows all there is to know about Karate person “He Is A Fool”. One of the truest Signs of a Good Sensei is “Humility and Humbleness’. All of the Inspirational Sensei’s that I have met in my short time in the World Sansei Organization have this great Character quality. With this realization also the understanding of the fact that “Great Karate and Martial Arts skill, doesn’t equate to a person having a Good Character or even good Morals” That is also a lesson I learned actually first in my journey form Hanshi Saavedra.

That Traditional Karate is about more than just blocks and strikes and katas.

It is a sum total of many, many Martial Arts forms, Traditions, Life Skills, Honor, Loyalty, Brotherhood. Just to name a few. The World Sansei Dojo Kun is more than I can define in a short essay. A Karate Sensei has a responsibility to help his student become good if not great leaders and quality people. To be an asset to their families and communities and countries and planet. A Sensei must first be the example of good character and loyalty, honor, selflessness, humbleness. Hence my Dojo motto”Creating Leaders with High Integrity”

World Sansei is a Brotherhood! ,, Not a Business

Why do I stress this statement so much you ask? It is 1 of the truest and most important epiphanies that I have had since joining the World Sansei Organization. I have developed many quality friendships and relationships with many Sansei men and women with nothing more in common than our love for the Art and Traditions and Values the World Sansei embodies. We do not wish to be the biggest or the greatest karate schools at the expense of the success of others. We want all the Dojo’s in the organization to all have success. In the World Sansei Organization we must have a common goal, which is to create as many quality students and especially High quality Black-Belts to carry on and continue to grow and build upon what we have begun. We have to have the mind-set that in order for the Organization to continue to prosper and grow in the future We have to follow the Motto of “Discard the Bad and Keep the Good” World Sansei has to continue to mature with the changing times yet keep what makes it a great and Honorable entity.

Recently I had a Great Life experience that will always be with me. Relating to my statement that proved to me the fact that “World Sansei Is a True Brotherhood of Great Sensei’s. I recently traveled to the wonderful country of Ecuador in South America on a vacation with my wife and son. We were there to do the normal tourist and visit relative type vacation. But there is also a Sansei Goju Ryu Dojo in the same city I was visiting, founded and ran by a Sensei Enrique Perez. He is also one of the oldest and original members of the World Sansei Organization. I contacted him while vacationing and that led to what turned into a truly remarkable vacation. Sensei Perez is a great Martial Artist and man. He opened his heart, home and family to my family. For the reason of no other than Our mutual love for the World Sansei and its values , traditions and our mutual respect for Hanshi Saavedra’s dream. He is now what I consider a lifelong friend and part of my extended Sansei Goju family. He invited my son and myself and my wife to his Dojo to learn and teach on numerous occasions. We were invited to travel with his wonderful family and to spend time on a beautiful beach and invited to stay at his family’s condo on the beach. Also as a farewell we were invited to a get together at his home for a truly great night of eating and Sansei brotherhood. I truly consider Sensei Perez a very wise and great martial Artist and friend. And extend to him and his family my Home and friendship and hospitality for all of time. “World Sansei is a Brotherhood of men and women with a unique mindset of the qualities that most will never know. The World Sansei Dojo Kun!

In closing, I also have realized an important and crucial ideal. All World Sansei Sensei’s should give back to their communities in which they live and visit. While in Ecuador I had to pleasure to do just that. I was jogging one morning and noticed a large group of older women and men doing Tai Chi in a local park. I stopped and participated in their Tai Chi class. In Ecuador the police are understaffed and underpaid and such a thing as a 911 emergency service does not exist. So, after spending time with these great women and men I wanted to give back to their community and I approached the Sifu (Chinese Tai Chi Sensei) about giving a Women’s Self Defense Class one morning after the Tai Chi class. They all said they were interested and actually excited. After borrowing a kicking shield from Sensei Perez. We had an awesome self defense Class for about 30 participant’s .They all had a great time and learned a lot. My wife was of course my invaluable English Translator and my son was a fantastic helper. We even had a 2^nd class for those who could not get enough of the first class the next morning. That following afternoon I also gave a Stranger Danger Class to a group of school children at a local Elementary School. They also learned a lot and had a great time. But to humbly admit it, It was I would had a the most awesome and fantastic experience, the expressions on their faces and there smiles and their appreciation for my helping them to be better able to help themselves was so gratifying. That I then realized that I would be teaching the Women Self Defense Class and the Children’s Stranger Danger classes for Free from now on in my own community and any where I can, be it in the USA or abroad. A Sensei can and should give his skills and expertise back to the Communities for Free. If all of us Sensei’s of the World Sansei gave just 1 class for free to our elderly and children of our communities can you possibly imagine the Good Karma that we would have. This is a unique talent that we as Sensei’s possess.

In Conclusion: I want to Give Thanks for Hanshi Saavedra’s confidence in me and his friendship and love. And my Gratitude for being allowed the Privilege to be a part of the World Sansei Koryu Goju Ryu Organization.

Después de años más o menos la sensación de mi vida estaba perdiendo de algo, me di cuenta de que la práctica de Karate era una parte de mi vida que me ha hecho completa. Es lo que soy, es lo que hago, no deportivas o ver deportes, y el Karate se había convertido en parte de lo que Brian Dean Robinson es como un hombre.
Ahora aquí es donde mi viaje de Karate como un arte marcial comenzó realmente. Después de comprobar todo el Dojo local en la ciudad y no estar en la más mínima impresión. ¿Por qué hago hincapié en esta afirmación? Es una de las epifanías más verdadera y más importante que he tenido desde que llege a la Sansei Organización Mundial. He desarrollado muchas amistades y las relaciones de calidad con muchos hombres y mujeres de Sansei sin nada más en común que nuestro amor por el arte, tradiciones y los valores que Sansei Mundial encarna. No queremos ser los más grandes o de las escuelas más grandes de karate a costa del éxito de los demás. Queremos que todo Dojo en la organización tengan éxito. En la Organización Mundial de Sansei tenemos que tener un objetivo común, que es la creación de los estudiantes de calidad como muchos, y especialmente cinturones negros de alta calidad para llevar a cabo y seguir creciendo y construir sobre lo que hemos comenzado. Tenemos que tener la mentalidad de que para que la Organización pueda seguir prosperando y creciendo en el futuro tenemos que seguir el lema de "descartar lo malo y conservar lo bueno". World Sansei tiene que seguir madurando con los tiempos cambiantes sin embargo, mantener lo que la convierte en una entidad grande y honorable.

Recientemente tuve una gran experiencia de vida que siempre estará conmigo y que demostró el hecho de que "World Sansei es una verdadera hermandad de Gran Sensei. He viajado recientemente a Ecuador en América del Sur en unas vacaciones con mi esposa e hijo. Estábamos allí para hacer lo de un turista normal y visita de vacaciones de tipo familiar. Pero también hay un Sansei Goju Ryu Dojo en la misma ciudad que me encontraba de visita, fundado y dirigido por un Sensei Enrique Pérez. También es uno de los miembros más antiguos y originales de la Organización Mundial de Sansei. Lo contacté mientras estaba de vacaciones y mis vacaciones fueron verdaderamente inolvidables. Sensei Pérez es un gran artista marcial y el hombre abrió su corazón, el hogar y su familia y me trato como parte de su familia. Sinceramente considero a Sensei Pérez un artista marcial muy sabio y gran amigo. Y le extiendo a él ya su familia a mi casa, mi amistad y hospitalidad por el resto de los tiempos. "World Sansei es una hermandad de hombres y mujeres con una mentalidad única de las cualidades más que nunca se sabe. El Mundial de Sansei Dojo Kun!

Para terminar, también me he dado cuenta de un ideal importante y crucial. Todo Sensei de Sansei Mundial deberia retribuir a sus comunidades en las que viven y visitan. Mientras estuve en Ecuador tuve el placer de hacer precisamente eso. Yo estaba corriendo una mañana y vi a un grupo grande de mujeres y hombres de la tercera edad haciendo Tai Chi en un parque local. Me detuve y participó en su clase de Tai Chi. En Ecuador la policía es insuficiente y mal pagados y tal cosa como un servicio de emergencia 911 no existe. Por lo tanto, después de pasar el tiempo con estas grandes mujeres y hombres que quería dar a su comunidad y me acerqué al Sifu (chino Tai Chi Sensei) le dije que queria dar una clase de Autodefensa para mujeres una mañana después de la clase de Tai Chi. Todos dijeron que estaban interesados y entusiasmados en realidad. Después de pedir prestado un escudo de patadas de Sensei Pérez. Tuvimos una clase de defensa personal impresionante con cerca de 30 participantes. Todos lo pasamos muy bien y aprendí mucho. Mi esposa era por supuesto, mi traductora de espanol invaluable y mi hijo era un ayudante fantástico. Incluso tuvimos una segunda clase de para aquellos que no se cansaba de la primera clase a la mañana siguiente. Esa tarde, después también di una clase de peligro extraño a un grupo de niños en edad escolar en una escuela primaria local. También aprendí mucho y lo pasamos muy bien. Humildemente admito que fue una experiencia increíble y fantástica, la expresión de sus rostros y sonrisas allí y su aprecio por mi ayuda a ser más capaces de ayudarse a sí mismos fue muy gratificante. Entonces me di cuenta de que voy a continuar ofreciendo clases de Auto Defensa para mujeres de clase y para niños peligro de extraño de forma gratuita a partir de ahora en mi propia comunidad y en cualquier lugar que pueda, ya sea en los EE.UU. o en el extranjero. Un Sensei puede y debe dar sus habilidades y experiencia a todas las comunidades de forma gratuita. The Organization

Mushotoku

A Zen term meaning no aim, no gain. Mushotoku is a philosophy of life, a way of living in which you act without wanting to achieve a result, and give without wanting something in return.

Successful leaders have a special quality when it comes to bringing people together. They have a specific attitude and mindset. They go beyond ‘managing people relationships’. They put people in the center of their lives, in the center of their dreams, of their plans. They envision their success because of the people around them. This is the way of Sansei..Its what I stand for and the organization embodies.

This are my rules of leadership:

First the people, then the results

I believe that creating success depends on the people in the organization.

interest in people to understand each others qualities

I believe that creating success depends on the people around me. I believe that the people together define the destination of this organization. We cannot define results before we have the right team.

I show interest not only in what people Have or what they Do, but also in whom the person Is. I want to understand the person’s background, experience, inspirations, ideas, drive, and concerns. I want good listeners around me that have much more top offer than their own ego.

Patience with building relationships

I understand that it requires time to build relationships that are based on mutual trust, openness and respect. I know that merely ‘using’ people to establish results will only lead to incidental success, not lasting success. I want the leaders of this organization not to sit and wait but actively invest in building lasting relationships and they should be persistent because they know it is crucial.

Independent thinking without ego

Strong and deep relationships do not prevent them from staying independent thinkers. Leaders of this organization should never just follow an opinion, decision, or action without checking the reasoning and the facts behind it. I will not ‘follow the group because others do’, and do not hesitate to give different opinion. I do not do this out of suspicion or driven by ego, but out of continuous curiosity and development of the organization. I want to go for the best and inspire the World Sansei Organization members to have the same curiosity and independent thinking, however always understanding the organization mission statement and its rules of conduct.

Always asking for feedback from others

Although being an independent thinker I am always open for feedback and different viewpoints. I actively ask for second opinions and alternatives and I trigger others to have the same attitude. I believe the complementarities of the members are crucial for the organizational success. I embrace contradictory opinions as the necessary fuel for sharpening judgments and decisions.

Taking decisions when necessary

I detect clearly the moments when decision taking is required. I can stimulate people for in-depth discussions and exchange of ideas and opinions, but I know exactly when the time has come to take decisions. On those moments I will not hesitate to take a decision.

Not wanting to please others, but building mutual respect

I do things or take decisions that lead to the desired destination. If these actions or decisions do please others, even better. But I am willing to take unpleasant decisions if it serves the common purpose of this organization. I understand that this will eventually lead to mutual respect. Trying to please others but undermining the higher purpose, will not lead to respect.

World Sansei, NO PLACE FOR EGO

Many a times you may have had occasion to witness fallout among members over some issue or the other. The result is that it sunders the organization into fragmented individuals and the organization then becomes history. I will never allow this to happen.

To anyone who is witnessing the event as an outsider, it becomes straightaway evident that whatever the cause of the rift among members it is bad for the future of the organization. However, to individual members, because they are so involved in the nitty gritty of organizational performance, the same is not apparent. Each one of them feels that it is their own view of things that is right and that of others is not of any importance.

If only individuals know what it is to be part of an organization, they would not indulge in mudslinging on their own colleagues or be jealous of them. Being a part of World Sansei means to realize that the organization can always achieve something that is greater than the entire individual efforts taken together. A organization like ours means unity in the face of adversity and difficult circumstances. It means an honor to be a member of this organization as then you leave your identity completely behind in the striving for glory as an organization.

Sometimes what happens is that a talented individual who may have played a major role in the organizations development, starts thinking of himself as being something superior to not only his colleagues but also to the entire organization as a cohesive entity. The member gets so much involved in his own performance, that the organizations overall objective gets superseded in his mind with his own importance. It is as if his individual ego wants to assert his importance as lording over all his colleagues.

Such a mindset is straightaway detrimental to an organizations future performance, because instead of the organizational overall goal, what gains supremacy and wants to get highlighted is individual praise. When an individual wants to hog all the limelight what angers the other members is that their combined effort is being completely negated.

This detracts from the combined positive effort of all organizational members success. because, they are then engaged more in in-fighting amongst themselves. The organization has lost even before taking its position because of an essentially negative mindset.

An organization takes time to build and time to create understanding between all members. If a member has any ego problems, it is better for the Organizational Founder to replace him or her with another who knows organizational unity any day is greater than individual ego. Therefore, when you are part of this organization, it is better that you do not allow your individual ego to assert itself.

Each of us has a moral and civic responsibility to reflect the teachings of our system in a positive and well tempered manner. Our art should not be left in the training hall. It should be with us as we walk home, enter work, meet new people, accept our daily challenges, and even when we pause to appreciate the beauty of nature around us. When approached with an open mind, the way of karate can influence every aspect of a person's life. We are not practicing a sport. This Art has been handed down through the years always expressing a careful consideration for spirit, loyalty, and virtue in all we do. As martial artists today, we are similar to the legendary practitioner of the past. Each of us can make as much of our training as we allow ourselves to envision. The only limits one will experience are those which are self-imposed. Therefore; the possibilities of our successes and personal growth are without bounds!
I take these teachings to heart, they are part of my being, as so is friendship. To me there is no grey area in friendship and loyalty. The World Sansei Gojuryu Karate organization was originally about those fundamental truths, friendship and loyalty. I learned a hard lesson and that is people have their own agenda and few understand what friendship is; but through this process I realized that many of us have not understood the true nature of what we do.

We shall discard the bad. We shall keep the good. We shall be loyal to ourselves, karate, family, community, and country. Love is our law. Truth is our worship. Form is our manifestation. Peace is our shelter. Nature is our companion. Order is our attitude. Beauty and perfection is our life."

This is the difference between an art form and a fighting system. This is what separates us from "Them". From those whose names shall not be mentioned and whose number is infinitesimally growing strong. This is what sets us apart from the barbaric traditions that have recently been televised for our viewing "pleasure" on pay-per-view. This is what divides the men from the boys.

It is the application of the Dojo Kun in one's life that makes an individual a martial artist instead of a fighter. This is what makes our Art an art form. For without it we would be nothing but empty vessels carrying out an empty tradition - which would be a tradition full of meaningless techniques; and I say empty without reference to the respectful Asian philosophies that "exist", or rather, "don't exist".

It is the very code we choose to live our lives by that gives meaning to what we practice and hold dear. And it is up to us to pass that along to the next generation, lest they be deceived in to believing "Their" misguided perceptions.

“Respect commands itself and it can neither be given nor withheld when it is due.”

Respect is earned. It's not a right you demand. It is something you earn. Just like trust. Trust and respect are both earned and can be lost if you are not careful. Respect includes higher standards not only for yourself, but for those around you, and those you love and care about, for your students and teachers alike. Respect preclud...es responsibility and accountability for your actions without excuses. It is not so easy to achieve given the fact that we live in the" Me" generation where people feel entitled to lots of things not earned repeat “not earned.” Moreover, you have to respect yourself first, in order to earn respect from others.

In my opinion, no one is entitled to your respect and you can give it and take it however you wish, it's your respect to give and take after all. And really everyone's guidelines for respect are governed by their own personal morals and ethics.
I give people respect when they earn it, and they lose it when they do something the calls for a loss of respect. There are quite a few people I have little or no respect for that I once did because of something they did or said. However, this is only if it actually matters if the other person cares.

Many years ago when we entered a karate dojo and started training, the first dojo protocol we were taught was the line-up at the beginning and end of class with the Sensei standing in front facing us the students. We bowed to the front in honor of our ancestral heritage, and then we bowed to the Sensei as a gesture of respect for the teacher. As time passes, by enduring incessant training while accumulating years of experience, we find ourselves standing in front facing the students. The students are bowing to us to express their respect to us as their Sensei. Our role in the dojo is now reversed. So what have we accomplished? To be worthy of the position in front? What did we achieve in order to earn the respect of the Students? The word Sensei is written in two Kanji characters: The literal meaning of the Kanji characters are:

“Sen”, meaning before or arriving early

“Sei”, meaning life or being born

Putting the two characters together gives the meaning of “being born before” or “living early”. In other words, the two characters project the meaning of: “the one who lived before” “the one who was born earlier” or“the one who has lived and experienced life before” Accordingly, the word “Sensei” is used to refer to an individual who has previously walked the path, learned the lessons and experienced the process. In karate, the Sensei is one who has a mastery of the martial arts and possesses profound life experience. The individual is well versed in the depth and breadth of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of karate, and is fully qualified to teach the art to others who wished to learn. In short, the individual is now a teacher of

the way of karate (hence karate-do), a tutor in life – a true Sensei.

Attaining the position of Senseiship can be a long and arduous process that requires dedication, commitment and effort. Yet, in order to maintain the status as an accomplished Sensei, even greater dedication, stronger commitment and more effort are required

Integrity

Integrity in the Martial Arts is easier to understand than to teach or explain. Integrity is a concept of; consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles and expectations. Either you have integrity or not, it’s a matter of black or white, not grayish tones. In the Martial Arts your actions must always be dictated by discerning what is right and what is wrong and acting on what you have discerned, even at personal cost. Everyday your integrity is put to the test, in your work and home, even at rest when your mind start to wander about future endeavors. Many self called instructors, masters or leaders, talk about their achievements and credentials to get your trust; but their words are different from their actions, and it is here where integrity is compromised. Integrity is regarded as the honesty and truthfulness of one’s actions. Integrity can be considered as the opposite of hypocrisy.

From the day we are born, our parents spend their lives trying to bring up, nourish, teach and develop us into the greatest human beings they can possibly make them. They do whatever is in their hands to see that the needs of their children are met. Parents make unconditional sacrifices and give up their lives for us. When we are young, parents sacrifice their sleep and rest. They are the first ones to wake up and the last ones to go to sleep. They are focused only on one goal, to provide for us. They go through continuous hard work all day just to make sure that they have done everything for us, from giving us food and shelter, to teaching us how to prepare for the world, to teaching us how to prepare for judgment day, to teaching us how to be a good citizen and most importantly, how to be great human beings. They do all this not to get any benefit from their children, but only with the hope and belief that their children will become pious, educated, and respectful to their parents, useful to their family, society, country and a living example of success.

FACING LIFE’S TRIALS

My dad has spent over seven years battling with the physical, psychological and familial effects of cancer.

He was diagnosed as having prostate cancer seven years ago. He was told the bad news behind a curtain on a busy hospital ward in Miami. Dad did not shed a tear, and then started to get on with the business of living with cancer.

After Radiation Therapy Dad’s treatment pathway was limited to controlling the spread of the cancer over time.

Dad quickly learned to cope with his cancer;

Now he is faced with the next battle against the Cancer; that of Chemo Therapy.

Love Your Parents

Many of the aged are dependent on others for their needs and livelihood. Their need include love, affection and attention from their loved ones, besides medicines, treatment for ailments, clothes, etc. In present-day society, the aged have their problems; these problems arise from the change that has come over our society in recent years.

for being strong
yet showing you cared.
For being my protector
and setting the rules
for the rides, the money,
and the help with school.
For all the times I was grounded
for my own good
I may not have been happy,
but I always understood
that I am lucky
